Corruption can have a devastating impact on the availability, quality and accessibility of human rights-related goods and services.It undermines the functioning and legitimacy of institutions and processes, the rule of law and ultimately the State itself.
Corruption affects all areas of society. Preventing corruption unlocks progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals, helps protect our planet, creates jobs, achieves gender equality, and secures wider access to essential services such as healthcare and education.
Corruption erodes the trust we have in the public sector to act in our best interests. It also wastes our taxes or rates that have been earmarked for important community projects – meaning we have to put up with poor quality services or infrastructure, or we miss out altogether.
The Commission also has the responsibility to mobilize and foster public support from civil society in the fight against corruption. This calls for closer anti-corruption collaboration with the Government, Civil Society and the private institutions.
