Equality is an important ideal. Equality refers to the provision of necessary and proportionate opportunities for the proper development of the personality of all. The right to equality is enshrined in Articles 14 to 18 of the Constitution. Article 14 of the Constitution states, "The State shall not deny to any person within the territory of India 'equality before the law' or 'the right to be equally protected by the laws.'" Article 15 of the Constitution provides for the establishment of equal social status for citizens. Section 16 mentions the social opportunities of all citizens in relation to appointment to government jobs or posts. Abolition of untouchability is mentioned in Article 17. Article 18 states that the State shall not confer any title or title which is not indicative of military or academic merit.
