Protecting Human Rights in disaster

human rights makes individuals and populations more vulnerable to devastation. In disaster conditions individuals have no control; but they have rights that are not suspended in such situations. On the other hand, governments have obligations to prepare and to protect.

The fundamental human rights that are violated in post-disaster situations include the rights to adequate housing, food, water and sanitation, health, work/livelihood, land, security of the person and home, information, participation, and education.

Human Rights Institutions are well-placed to play a role in upholding human rights standards for those affected by natural disasters.

Victims of disasters face various human rights challenges: unequal access to assistance, discrimination in aid provision, unsafe resettlement, property restitution, and displacement . These challenges can occur in different phases of disaster management.

Disaster can strike at any moment. Common people suffer the most from disasters. They lost their homes. Lack of food, clothing, shelter. In such a situation they do not get their human rights. Hence PHRC continues to try to support them through disaster management across India.
